Pathetic service. I ordered two shirts and one trouser, and despite giving clear instructions, both the shirts and the trouser were made incorrectly. When I asked for alterations, the changes made only worsened the fit the sizes became shorter and unusable. When I raised the issue, all I received was a simple apology with no effort to fix the problem or offer further alterations. This has been a complete waste of money and a very disappointing experience. Be careful

Recently we visited the shop for some alteration for 2 suits we bought from Germany. The owners agreed to do the alteration according to our needs. The delivery date given after 1 month. But they couldn't delivered it on time. After about 10 days we had to go again for the delivery . This time too the suits were not ready, we sat there for hours to get the delivery as we needed to catch our flight next day. At last when they delivered the suits we found that most of the alteration wasn't done at all, and the part they did, that was not remotely satisfactory. We had to pay ₹2000/- for that semi-done job. By the way, our local laundry did the alteration we needed for ₹260/- and delivered overnight upon our request. We wish we didn't go to Barkat Ali. Won't recommended Barkat Ali at all.

I live in the US, however growing up in Calcutta I have been aware of Barkat Ali's good reputation for tailoring suits. So, when I visited Cal this summer, I decided to get a few suits done and naturally visited the store, picked up material for 3 suits from them and got myself measured. I also left them with a suit jacket from the US so they can use that for sizing, cut and fit. I had limited time as I was only visiting for a week, but they said that they will get it done within that time. They obviously wanted the business, which is fine by me. They finished the suits just in time. The trousers fit just great, however the jackets were not a great fit. They were not snug, instead a little too lose in the front. Because I was leaving on a flight later that day, there was not enough time to get it altered with them. Upon returning to the US, I took it to a local alteration place and they fixed all three suit jackets but it cost me $220 to get them fixed. But that was only the beginning of problems. The store that fixed the jackets informed me how shoddy and poorly they were stitched and how bad the inseam was. They said it was a rush job, the inseams were uneven - not enough cloth on one side, too much on the other. They pointed out that this will result in gather and deformation inside once the suits are dry cleaned or the lining could tear easily on the sides with not enough material. Worse, much of the inside material was GLUED together! They, nor I could believe it! Imagine when the suits go for dry cleaning with all this glue inside. Terrible! And, I paid top money in Indian Rupees for these suits. I would have never known of their shoddy and cheap work on the inside unless I had to get it altered back in the US. I am very disappointed that Barkat Ali, who has been a landmark of Calcutta for generations has deteriorated to this level. I will never set foot in that store ever!

My experience with this shop has been quit poor. They might claim the shop has legacy, which maybe true but at present the customer experience is quite pathetic. Since I wanted to test the service of this place, I ordered a 3 piece suit before trusting them with my big day. The options they have is very limited and they would like you to choose from a standard template than something new. I was promised a trial before the final product was ready but that never happened. Additionally I had to call multiple times to check instead they should inform us proactively. Stiching was quite average with buttons not properly aligned. After sale service was even pathetic since whenever I called to inform after fitting issue, I was told they are quite busy and was asked to visit the store after few weeks. I don’t stay in Kolkata and just to get few basic fitting I had to travel to kolkata. Outcome: They lost my entire families (10 suit’s) order for my wedding and we were happy with the alternate store ( ayub’s)
